Superfood Energizing Smoothie Recipe with Maca (Joyous Vid)

Enjoy my video as I share the ingredients and health benefits of my post-exercise smoothie.

Smoothie Ingredients:

  • 1/2 scoop SUNWARRIOR protein powder (or any NON-soy vegan protein)
  • 1 tsp maca root powder
  • 1/2 tsp organic cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 banana
  • Handful berries
  • Something green, either a handful of kale or spinach or a GREENS powder such as the one I mention in my video
  • Water to desired consistency

Blend and enjoy!

Health Benefits

Sunwarrior Protein:

  • One of my favourite protein powders because it’s creamy like whey (without the belly ache) and contains all 9 essential amino acids. It’s 85% protein, which is the highest (non-soy) raw whole grain sprouted protein on the market.
  • Highly digestible because it’s “sprouted”, meaning, it’s like eating a pre-digested food. The enzyme inhibitors have been removed and your gut can very easily break it down, assimilate and absorb all the nutrients.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • 100% organic and non-GMO.
  • High in vitamins and minerals and since absorption is high due to the brown rice being sprouted, this means you are truly getting these nutrients where you  need them – into your cells.

Maca Root Powder

  • Smells like heaven – nutty and delicious, without being overpowering.
  • A quick and inexpensive way to feel like a superhero.
  • High in vitamins (particularly vitamin B12), minerals (bone-building: calcium and magnesium) and is a complete source of vegetarian protein.
  • Has been used historically, for a variety of purposes, including the balancing of thyroid function, endocrine hormones, sexual function, alleviating PMS and as a regulator for healthy aging.
  • It’s recommended to start with a half teaspoon of maca every day and to work up to a teaspoon or two a day over the course of a few weeks. If you’re taking it daily, it’s best to take a day off each week.

  • Yum! I’ve been reading a lot about maca lately and I think I really have to try it. It sounds amazing. I make smoothies for my kids every day, can I put it in their smoothies? Maybe just a smaller amount than I would use for myself? Thanks for all the recipes :D

  • Hi Joy, I was just en-’joy’-ing my first blog update, and video from Joyous Health.
The smoothie looks and sounds delicious.

I am very interested in the Maca Root Powder – the benefits of sneaking it in, as I have issues with hormone imbalance.
I currently take St. John’s Wort daily, and am just wondering if it is safe for me to try the Maca as well?
(I am always interested in something natural and safe that works!)

    • I don’t know of any contraindications of maca and St. John’s Wort, but I suggest you do your research to be sure because St. John’s has quite a few contraindications. Off the top of my head I would say it’s okay because maca is very supportive to the body but note that it’s not a quick fix/miracle cure, but rather works on nourishing the glands in behind the scenes that aid in hormonal balance ie. the hypothalamus and pituitary glands.

  • Definitely too cold here too to run outside. BRR!!

    Oooh delicious-sounding smoothie concoction!

    Always love your videos! :)

  • Yum, great recipe! You included some of a my favourites. I also use Sun Warrior protein and love it!

I used to use MediClear protein (, which is also rice based, but once I moved to Melbourne I switched to Sun Warrior and couldn’t be happier. Maca root powder is something I’ve been meaning to pick up. Loving Earth, an Aussie brand, has a GREAT Maca powder.

Have you tried Mesquite powder? It adds a lovely carmely taste to any super foods powder.

    Thanks, Joy!

  • Joy, this is exactly the same recipe I use for one of my fave after workout smoothies! I usually use 1 cup of almond milk and then water depending on consistency. Maca is something I try to use often, thanks to you and your EatWellFeelWell class! Thanks for the vid, you make ME joyous watching it! :) xo

  • Joy – it looks great. I had a question about smoothies in general…Would you eat this INSTEAD of breakfast?

The one thing that scares me away from smoothies is all the calories.

How do you ensure that the caloric intake isn’t too high?

  • Wow, I truly wish I could book an appt. with you. At a health crisis, but with low finances. I love this site. Wish I could sit and chat with you over a dinner at Rawlicious :)

  • Just got Sun Warrior Vanilla Protein (thankfully iHerb ships to Germany!) and was finally able to try your smoothie – YUM !!! :-) Thanks for the recipe, Joy!

  • could you please tell me how many grams of protein you are getting from 1/2 scoop of sunwarrior? (i do not have sunwarrior) also – if i were to make this as a breakfast, could i just use a full scoop of whatever protein powder i am using?
