Note from Joy: Elaine's post is perfectly timed because the Joyous 10 Day Detox for 2015 is now available! This is the perfect smoothie to enjoy in preparation for the detox or while on the detox. Whatever your reason, you'll love it because it's fresh and delicious!

Smoothies are a great addition to any detox program because they provide us with an abundance of easily assimilated nutrients while also giving our digestion a much needed rest.

But let’s face it. It’s cold outside! And the idea of drinking a smoothie might have you shivering just at the thought.

That’s why when Joy asked me to share one of my favorite detox-friendly smoothies with her readers I knew I had to ensure that is was winter-friendly as well!

For this reason I’ve omitted frozen fruit and actually suggest drinking it at room temperature for optimal enjoyment.

Detoxification for me is synonymous with simplifying and getting back-to-basics. That’s why I also chose a recipe that contains only real-food ingredients that you’ll find easily at the grocery store or that you may already have on-hand.

The fusion of banana and avocado with a touch of coconut milk lends to a delicious and creamy consistency that’s reminiscent of sitting on a tropical island beach, while the kale provides your hit of leafy green, chlorophyll-rich goodness.

The addition of lemon juice helps cleanse the liver and gets your gastric juices flowing, and the ginger gives it an anti-inflammatory kick while also providing some much needed warmth on a cold and chilly winter day.

Ingredients
  • 2-3 leafs of Lacinato Kale de-stemmed (feel free to use another variety if you choose)
  • 1 small ripe banana (Note: important that it’s ripe as this is where the sweetness comes from!)
  • ½ a ripe avocado scooped out of the flesh
  • Approx. ½ inch piece of ginger
  • Juice of ½ a lemon
  • ¼ cup of canned coconut milk (or ¾ cup of coconut milk in a carton – in this case only add ½ cup of water below).
  • 1 cup of water
Instructions
  1. Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender, serve it up and enjoy!

Enjoy it as a light meal or snack, and be sure to choose organic ingredients when possible to lessen your toxic load. At the very least make sure you opt for organic kale, as this one is on the dirty dozen list!
