Cherries and chocolate together in the same recipe have always been a good idea. When I was a teenager my go-to ice cream was Ben & Jerry’s “Cherry Garcia” which was chunks of cherries along with chocolate for a perfect match. Do you remember that?!
Now that I’m all grown up and still love this combo, I make this creamy, delicious and super healthy smoothie bowl with wonderful whole-foods based ingredients!
This smoothie bowl is totally plant-based. Packed with protein, fibre and nutritients to keep you satisfied and energized!
You might be wondering why add the zucchini?
Along with avocado, it is the ultimate secret smoothie hack for adding creaminess and thickening it up without sacrificing flavour. Zucchini is a great low carb squash that is rich in both soluble and insoluble fibre making it excellent for gut health.
You need both avocado and zucchini to make a thick smoothie bowl. If it’s too thin in consistency, then your crunchy and yummy toppings will sink right to the bottom!
There’s not much thinking required to make this recipe, plop all the ingredients into a blender, give it a blitz and then get creative with your toppings.
Breakfast & Brunch
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh or frozen cherries, if using fresh, be sure to remove the pits before blending
- 1 cup fresh spinach
- Half a zucchini
- Half an avocado
- 2 bananas
- 2 scoops chocolate protein powder
- 1-2 cups plus more if need non-dairy milk
- Optional: 2 tbsp honey or 10 drops stevia
Toppings
- Rawcology Chocolate Oat Clusters
- 1/4 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
- Sliced banana
- Sliced cherries
- Place all the ingredients excluding the milk into a blender. Add milk 1 cup at a time to desired thickness. You want the smoothie almost as thick as pudding so the toppings sit on top easily. Blitz until smooth and creamy.
- Pour smoothie into bowl. Place desired toppings on top of smoothie bowl. Have fun!
Serves 2 generously or 4 modestly.
And you know what? I don’t even miss that Cherry Garcia one bit!
Enjoy!

Looks delicious. Is it possible to substitute cacao powder for the protein powder?
Yes absolutely! You could add a little honey or stevia if it’s not sweet enough.
Looks very delicious 🤤

Hi! What chocolate protein powder did you use / reco? Thanks!!
I’ve been using Manitoba Harvest protein. If you aren’t bothered by pea protein, Genuine Health is also great.
