Top 7 Skin-Loving Benefits of Rosehip Oil

This article outlines what rosehip is, its top 7 skin loving benefits, and why it's a non-negotiable part of my (and Kate Middleton's!) skincare routine.
Jun 27, 2022 | Joy McCarthy

As you know, I’m a big fan of a holistic approach to skin health, which means I believe that what we put in our bodies is just as important as what we put on our skin. What we eat should be as close to nature as possible, so should what we put on our skin. After all, what goes on our skin, gets absorbed into our body.

When it comes to supporting healthy skin, I’m a huge fan of rosehip oil. It has numerous benefits to give you healthy, hydrated and glowing skin.

In this article today, I’m going to share the following:

And before we get to it, did you know I’m not the only one who is a big fan of rosehip oil, apparently Kate Middleton and her mother are huge fans - so yes, rosehip oil has royal beauty approval!

Let’s dig a little deeper into this underrated beauty booster.

What Is Rosehip Oil and Where Does It Come From?

As you may have guessed from the name, rosehips come from a specific type of rose plant. The oil comes from the seed of the little fruit that’s left behind after the rose has bloomed. It looks like a small, reddish-orange berry and the magic of rosehip oil comes from the seeds found within this cute little gem.

Some of the best rosehip oil in the world comes from the Andes mountains in Chile and also, in Bulgaria because the soil and the climate provides the best environment to produce the most nutrient-dense rosehip oil rich in fatty acids and vitamins (hint, hint, that’s where our rosehip oil is sourced from!). It does grow elsewhere including in Canada, but the most premium rosehip oil is from Chile or Bulgaria.

Top 7 Skin-Loving Benefits of Rosehip Oil

There are many skin-loving benefits of this beautiful plant. Let’s dig into how you can use rosehip oil topically to support your healthiest, happiest, most hydrated skin ever!

Rosehip oil skin benefits

1. Rosehip Oil is Incredibly Moisturizing

One of many skin-loving components of rosehip oil is its polyunsaturated fatty acids, which nourish the skin from the outside in. Many high end oils just sit on top of the skin whereas rosehip oil penetrates deeply into the skin, seals in moisture and improves the texture of your skin.

Your skin will feel like a newborn baby’s bum after a few week’s of use! These beneficial oils can help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by UV rays and pollution by helping to repair the all important skin barrier.

2. Rich in Antioxidants to Prevent Premature Aging

Rosehip oil contains powerful antioxidants in the form of vitamins C & E and beta-carotene, all of which can help prevent premature aging of the skin seen as wrinkles.

Since preventing damage is a lot easier than trying to reverse it after the fact, adding rosehip oil to your skin routine can help keep you glowing and fresh-faced. That’s why it’s one of only two powerful ingredients in the Hello Joyous Hella Hydrating Serum!

3. Reduces The Appearance of Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Have you noticed a theme here yet? Using natural oils, such as rosehip, that are packed with anti-inflammatory compounds and skin soothing oils that hydrate and nourish the skin can help slow the signs of aging. In fact, research has shown that after using rosehip oil for 8 weeks, the skin's moisture level and elasticity is increased, which reduces fine lines around the eyes. Now that’s something to be joyous about!

By giving your skin the support it needs to repair itself, while boosting moisture levels and collagen production, you can rock an all-natural glow, no highlighter required!

4. Soothes Redness and Prevents Skin Irritation

Those fatty acids that give rosehip oil many of its benefits for skin are the top reason they can soothe redness and prevent skin irritation. Skin can get easily irritated when it’s dry or the skin barrier function is compromised. Since those fatty acids are incredibly anti-inflammatory they calm irritation which reduces redness of the skin and supports an optimal barrier function.

Rosehip oil can be especially beneficial for anyone who suffers from rosacea. It’s the number one choice for rosacea due to the nourishing properties including the fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

5. Helps to Even Out Skin Tone

Uneven skin tone is a very common problem which can be seen as redness in fair skin and texture variances and dark spots in all skin colours. Anytime there are significant hormonal changes such as pregnancy, use of the birth control pill, and even aging, uneven skin tone can be a result. Sun is another very common cause of uneven skin tone. Rosehip oil is packed with vitamin C which helps to even out skin tone and help you have a vibrant, healthy looking glow!

6. Supports Collagen Production

When it comes to supporting collagen production, vitamins A and C are crucial cofactors and rosehip oil contains an abundance of both. Collagen is a specific type of protein found in our body that helps our skin look plump since it makes up 90% of the dermis (our skin!) by dry weight.

As we age, our ability to produce collagen decreases, so we want to consume the foods and nutrients that support our bodies in this process! Collagen improves the hydration of the skin, reduces roughness and increases elasticity, which diminishes visual signs of aging because when our skin is hydrated it is less prone to wrinkling. This is why I’m also a big fan of taking collagen as a supplement - boosting collagen by taking it internally is the most effective way to increase production.

7. Promotes Skin Healing and Helps Your Skin Glow

All those amazing antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, and skin-loving fats work together to help promote skin regeneration and healing, making rosehip oil is an amazing addition to your skincare routine if you struggle with rosacea, eczema, dry skin, or have acne scarring.

It can also minimize the appearance of dark spots and help your skin glow! If you struggle with itchiness, skin irritation, redness, or discoloration, rosehip oil can help to balance out your complexion. These nourishing, anti-inflammatory fats hydrate the skin while sealing in moisture for smoother, softer skin.

Why Cold-Pressed & Organic Rosehip Oil Matters

When it comes to choosing products that are good for you and the planet, I always suggest purchasing organically grown options whenever possible. Not only are organic products lower in pesticide residues and other contaminants, they don’t have a negative impact on the environment as they are being grown. Plus, if we’re using rosehip oil for its health benefits, we don’t want to counteract or negate them by purchasing a product that’s loaded with toxins!

In order to retain all the incredible healing benefits of rosehip oil, you want to make sure you always look for a cold-pressed source.

If you’re wondering what cold-pressed means and why it’s important when choosing your rosehip oil, keep reading. Cold-pressing is a process that doesn’t use any high heat or intense process to extract the oils from the seeds. In fact, the rosehip oil we use in our Hella Hydrating has zero heat when the oil is extracted. It is raw and unrefined.

Since the main oils from the rosehip seeds are polyunsaturated, they are sensitive to heat, light, and air, so regular processing can cause the oils to go rancid and/or destroy all the delicate antioxidant properties. Cold-pressed oils don’t have that problem since the process is done at a much lower temperature or in the case of our rosehip oil, no heat whatsoever! You want your rosehip oil to look beautifully orange and have a subtly earthy, planty smell, not sour or rancid. That’s how you know it’s as close to pure and fresh as possible.

When I was formulating the Hello Joyous Skincare line, I wanted to make sure my products were as safe, pure, and effective as possible. That’s why my go-to moisturizer, the Hella Hydrating Serum is made with only two incredible ingredients: cold-pressed, organic rosehip oil and skin-plumping hyaluronic acid. Together, this duo will help soften, soothe, and hydrate your skin for the most amazing, all-natural glow!
