One class of healing supplements that are creating a movement in the wellness world are medicinal mushrooms. Today I want to share everything about reishi mushroom–something I've been using for years to support my nervous system and overall health.

What is Reishi?

Reishi is a fungi that goes by the latin name Ganoderma lucidum or Lingzhi in China that has been used for thousands of years to support everything from sleep to immune function. It tends to grow in the humid and hot areas of Asia and has a glossy appearance. It is a large, woody mushroom that grows on trees or logs and has a distinctive reddish orange hue with a rounded edge.

One of the things about medicinal mushrooms is that you can’t really eat them raw or unprepared to get the benefits. That’s because they contain a compound called chitin that is difficult for our bodies to digest.

This chitin compound means that in order to separate the beneficial compounds from the mushrooms they must be properly prepared. When it comes to mushroom supplements you want to look for extractions from both hot water and alcohol. Certain compounds are only going to be able to be extracted via hot water extraction and others are only going to be available via alcohol extraction.

This dual extraction process is important because some companies merely grind up the mycelium and put them into capsules or powders.

However, these formulations are difficult for the body to digest, which means you might be paying good money for a supplement with minimal benefits.

You will also want to look for companies that focus on the fruiting bodies of the mushroom as opposed to the mycelium. The fruiting body is the part of the mushroom that you would see growing on the tree or forest floor if you were out foraging. This part of the mushroom contains a higher proportion of the compounds responsible for the health benefits. The mycelium is an important part of the mushroom, akin to a root system, but it doesn’t contain nearly as many of the healing compounds as the fruiting body.

Many companies create their supplements out of the mycelium because they are cheaper to produce and process.

Reishi has demonstrated strong testosterone-inhibiting effects, preventing it from converting into the stronger DHT form. Since these hormones are responsible for many of the symptoms associated with PCOS including acne, hirsutism, hair loss, anovulation, and irregular menstrual cycles, it could be a helpful addition to a healing plan for those with this condition.
