What is the Difference Between Coconut Oil and Coconut Butter?

This is a common question and there is a big different between coconut oil and coconut butter.

This is a question I often get asked as a nutritionist and there seems to be a lot of confusion on the matter. I’ve put together this lovely graphic and short video to clearly explain the coconut confusion!

Be sure to watch all the way through as it is really important to make sure your coconut oil is “hexane free”. Learn more about this dirty petroleum based chemical in my video.

  1. Is the oil is certified organic, does that mean it is also hexane free? Mine is certified organic, but there is no mention of “hexane free.”

I buy my coconut oil at Costco and it is hexane free. I just checked.

  3. Thank you Joy for clarifying this and the facts about Coconut Oil. I just bought LouAnn’s from Walmart and have used it for a while now. Knowing what I do now, I’ll return the new one I bought and will look at Costco (recommended by Nancy – another commenter). You are the best. LG

  4. It’s 54 oz for around $16. We use it for cooking. Also try Raw Coconut Butter by Artisana – it’s wonderful by the spoonful as a pick-me-up. I often take a spoonful if I am a bit hungry. I love the taste and texture. A real treat. Too expensive for cooking, though.

    Hi Susana,

Do you mean where do we get it? I usually get mine at the health food store, although some grocery stores do carry it. In terms of using coconut butter, check out the coconut butter graphic at the top of this post for some great ideas.

    Hi Hayleigh,

You’ll want to stick with coconut oil for beauty uses. Coconut butter still contains coconut flesh, so it’s a very different product.

I Use it as a face or body moisturizer. Many women use it to improve and to prevent the appearance of stretch marks.Coconut oil has many reported benefits. It is associated with specific positive health effects and can act as an aid in certain body functions.

Hi Jann! Most major grocery stores carry it now (in the organic section). You can also find it at most health foods stores. Artisana is a great brand to look for 🙂

I don’t mind the gridyness goodness of the butter I just figure it’s kind of like an exfoliant if you use it in the shower is it okay to use coconut butter on your body does it have the same effects and benefits if not more?

Hey Ophelia! That’s great! You are welcome to use coconut oil as a skin moisturizer as well (except not on your face, as it tends to clog the pores too much) Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  13. Hi there,
I was looking at the nutiva brand of coconut oil. They changed the package and it doesn’t say it hexane free. Is it still good or there are other oil?

  14. Joy McCarthy

I’m not sure, I would recommend contacting the company directly and asking them. If it’s a certified organic product then hexane would not be allowed.
