Homemade Lip Scrub 3 Ways

Exfoliate and nourish dry lips naturally with these 3 easy DIY lip scrub recipes made with simple ingredients like honey, coconut oil, and cacao.

Dry, flaky lips can happen any time of year, whether it’s from cold weather, sun exposure, dehydration, or simply spending time in dry indoor environments. Instead of reaching for a store-bought lip scrub filled with artificial flavours and fragrances, why not make your own with simple ingredients from your kitchen?

These three DIY lip scrub recipes gently exfoliate away dead skin while nourishing and softening your lips. Made with ingredients like coconut oil, honey, cacao, and essential oils, they’re easy to customize, budget-friendly, and so effective. As a bonus, they work beautifully on dry hands and feet too!

I’ve kept the first recipe super simple so you don’t have to go anywhere to buy anything, and hopefully you already have all the ingredients at home. If you don’t, you can likely get these online. I have posted the links below to brands I like for these ingredients.

The basic instructions are in my video and the printable recipe cards are below.

My first recipe is the basic one. All you need is sugar, coconut oil and essential oil.

Next up, I’ve added honey for all its skin-hydrating benefits to this Peppermint Lip Scrub. Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts moisture. Olive oil is rich in skin-nourishing fatty acids and antioxidants—even Cleopatra was a huge fan!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp organic cane sugar
  • 1 tsp raw honey*
  • 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil (evoo)
  • 1-2 drops peppermint essential oil
Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine sugar, honey, evoo and peppermint essential oil.
  2. Use right away or store in a cool, dry place in a covered container for 2-3 weeks.
  3. To use: Place some scrub on your finger and rub gently on your lips. Feel the magic of the exfoliation! Remove with a towel and feel how silky smooth your lips are!

Notes

*If the honey has crystallized, just warm it on the stove in a small pot because it should be liquid for mixing into the ingredients.

My final recipe has the benefits of chocolate from raw cacao powder. It’s darn tasty, so it’s a challenge not to lick it off your lips. I doubled this recipe so I can use it on my hands. In fact, all 3 of these scrubs are incredible for softening your hands.

  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
Instructions
  1. Combine all the ingredients into a small bowl. Once full combined transfer to a jar and cover with a lid. Store for 2 to 3 weeks.

Notes

I made a larger amount of this because you could use this as a foot or hand scrub as well as a lip scrub.

How to use it

On clean dry lips, place a pea-size amount of scrub on your finger and gently rub your lips for a minute. Wipe clean with a cloth and moisturize with your favourite natural lip balm or body butter.

For your hands or feet: With clean hands, use a quarter size of scrub and gently rub your hands or feet. Wash off with water and moisturize with body butter.

Hi Joy. These look amazing. Is it possible to use a lemon or peppermint extract instead of oil? I don’t have any oil.
