Double Chocolate Espresso Smoothie

True to its name this smoothie has both chocolate protein powder and raw cacao powder, plus a shot of espresso! It is decadent and delicious!

This smoothie is a creation of my hubby, Walker — and if you know him, you know this has his name written all over it. Back in the day when he worked at a gym as a personal trainer he would make this smoothie with his buddy Richie. They created it to have something energizing that kept them fuelled for hours on end.

You can watch the recipe video here or scroll down to the bottom for the printable recipe card.

So that’s your warning that this is not a smoothie to make later in the day. This is a great morning smoothie!

We’ve named it the Double Chocolate Espresso Smoothie which is true to its name because there is both chocolate protein powder and raw cacao powder, plus a shot of espresso. The ingredients are simple, whole and healthy.

You can definitely use decaf if you don’t drink caffeinated beverages. Also, if you don’t have an espresso machine, then coffee will work too.

This double chocolate espresso smoothie tastes as good as it looks. It’s also super energizing from both the espresso and the raw cacao powder. Walker added the oat flakes to make it more meaty but if you don’t eat any grains, simple omit.

It is totally plant-based, rich in protein, good fat and fulfilling. It will definitely give you a good boost of energy.

The protein powder we used is Genuine Health’s fermented, organic and plant-based chocolate flavour. It does not make you bloated AT ALL – which is a big deal when it comes to protein powders.

Ingredients

  • 1-2 bananas*
  • 1/2 cup oat flakes or old fashioned rolled oats
  • 3-4 tbsp almond butter or sunbutter for nut-free
  • 1 double shot espresso**
  • 4 tbsp raw cacao powder or cocoa powder
  • Optional: 1 scoop chocolate vegan protein powder
  • 1 cup non-dairy milk like oat or almond
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients into a high power blender and blitz until smooth and creamy. Wow, it's delish!

Notes

*As per my video, you do not need to use 2 bananas. **If you do not have an espresso machine, you can use coffee instead.
Serves 1 generously.

Walker and I shared this but if you’re just making it for yourself it is a generous portion.

Enjoy!

  1. Thx for the recipe! Will definitely try. One question…is it 1/2 cup of oats? It doesn’t specify above, just says “1/2”

  2. Hi Cuties,

Super delicious! I need to change my protein powder out, so I plan on purchasing from Genuine Health after I use up the rest of my protein powder.

Used Dandy Blend (Instant Herbal alternative with Dandelion) instead of coffee and it turned out delicious. Also added 1 tangerine for some”orange” flavour since I love orange and chocolate combo. Used only 1 frozen banana and 1/4C oats (instead of 1/2) since I was only making 1 serving for me. 🙂 Really yummy and so filling.
