Welcome to thoughtful, organic beauty
Hello Joyous is an organic, plant-based, sustainable beauty brand here to bring more joy to your day.
I still remember the first time I ever had a grilled cheese and apple sandwich. It was nearly 20 years ago at a little Belgian-style cafe in Toronto called Le Petit Dejeuner. The taste was new and foreign to me because I had grown up on your typical grilled cheese sandwich (which did not include any fruit). The addition of the apple was so fresh and delicious. I would get this sandwich with a salad to go on my lunch break quite often when I worked for a marketing agency down the street. It was total comfort food.
The addition of the pear (or apple) is so fresh and so delicious!!
This sandwich may not be for everyone, because yes there is dairy and gluten, but there are options in the recipe to make it cow-dairy-free and gluten-free. But most importantly, this grilled cheese is made with 100% real food.
Speaking of real food...
Many of my friends grew up in the 80s and 90s on Kraft Cheese Singles. You know, the cheese-like substance in plastic wrap? It makes me shudder just thinking about it. I hated the smell of them. I have to give my parents thanks because they never gave my brother and I Kraft Singles cheese slices. Is that even cheese? We always had real cheese, I remember my dad being pretty adamant about that.
This grilled cheese tastes delicious with either white cheddar or goat cheese. If you can't or choose not to eat dairy, you could also use a cashew cheese instead but it won't melt the same of course.
Here's the recipe for two people. I decided to use pear, but you could use either apple or pear.
What's your favourite way to dress up a grilled cheese sandwich?

That looks so yummy!! I'm definitely going to try it. Question: when I cook the sandwich in the pan, should I cover it with the lid or will it make it go all mushy? And can I make this in the morning and then bring it with me to work for lunch? Thanks! Valentina
ReplyI don't think a lid is necessary and might make it a tad soggy. You can definitely pack this for lunch, although it's probably best when it's hot right out of the pan! I hope you enjoy it :) Heather- Joyous Health Team
Thank you your grilled cheese looks delicious. I am going to try it for sure
ReplyYay! Enjoy :) Heather- Joyous Health Team
Looks great! So excited to see they have solid block goat cheese available! I didn’t know they carried that. I tried looking for it at a couple of health food stores but was not able to find it. I was just wondering if you have any recommendations on stores that carry it? Thanks so much, Pris
ReplyHi Pris! Most larger health food stores carry it in Toronto (The Big Carrot, Whole Foods, The Healthy Planet, etc.) and even some Loblaws (organic aisles). If you head to a specialty cheese shop, they will have lots of hard goat/sheep cheese options. Just ask them (and maybe enjoy some samples;) ).I hope that helps! Heather- Joyous Health team
Going to make this sandwich with the soup on the weekend😊
ReplyPerfect, enjoy!!
My favourite sandwich is a cross between a grilled cheese and a Reuben sandwich. I spread the outside of 2 slices of bread with butter and the inside with Dijon mustard. Then top with cheese slices (of your choice), grilled cremini mushrooms, sliced, and some sauerkraut. Grill. Delicious! Anne
ReplyInteresting combo! Sounds like something my hubby would love :)
Shame on me but I like bacon (I get the nitrite free bacon though)
ReplyNo shame. I love bacon too!
