How to Make Homemade Coconut Yogurt

Have you ever made your own coconut milk yogurt? This recipe is easy, healthy and homemade!

In the McJordan household, we eat both coconut and sheep’s milk yogurt and sometimes goat too. We don’t do cow dairy yogurt because it doesn’t agree with me (makes me puffy and constipated) and Walker doesn’t really care either way.

Although, truth be told when we first started dating he was all about the Greek yogurt and after hanging out with me most of the time he stopped eating as much dairy and guess what? His digestion dramatically improved (no more farting). In fact, we have a fart-free household, lol. Well, maybe sometimes Vienna toots but it’s not because she’s eating Greek yogurt or slurping on cow’s milk — those are foods we just don’t buy. Once in a while, I do buy grass-fed yogurt but more often than not we have the other options I just mentioned.

Farting aside, coconut yogurt is not expensive so I often buy it, but lately, I’ve been making it from scratch because it’s a little bit cheaper than buying it every week and it’s incredibly delicious.

You’ll love how easy coconut yogurt is to make and when you watch my video you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Based on the recent news about coconut oil you may be hesitant to make this yogurt, but rest-assured coconut products are incredibly healthy and can be part of a well-balanced diet.

Even though coconut oil and this yogurt are higher in saturated fat, the large majority of it comes from medium chain fatty acids which are proven to be beneficial for weight management, may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and boost immunity.

The truth is, we need all types of fat to be healthy (excluding trans fats), even saturated fats. Saturated fat has many important roles:

  • A building block of every cell in your body, part of the cellular membrane, provides structure and support.
  • Supports bone health because saturated fat is needed to direct calcium into bone.
  • Critical for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E and K.
  • Needed for the conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A. An essential nutrient for cancer prevention, skin and eye health.
  • Keeps your immune system robust and healthy. In fact, a lack of saturated fatty acids in white blood cells hampers their ability to recognize and destroy foreign invaders, such as bacteria, and viruses.
  • Essential for brain health because it is a fundamental building block in brain health. In fact, a Mayo Clinic study found that those individuals consuming the most saturated fat experienced a 36% reduction in risk for developing dementia. And this comes on the heels of data now indicating that saturated fat consumption has absolutely no relevance in the area of cardiovascular risk as recently described by Dr. Glen Lawrence in the journal, Advances in Nutrition.

And isn’t it interesting to note that one of the richest sources of saturated fat in nature is mama milk! Which is why breastfeeding is incredibly important.

It’s a myth that saturated fat causes heart disease and sadly, many conventional medical doctors are still simply not aware. Just google “lipid hypothesis” or check out this PubMed link and do your own reading so that you may come to your own conclusions, please. Then tell everyone you know, including your doctor 😉

Okay now that we got that out of the way, let’s get to this recipe shall we? Then you can make my delicious Coconut Yogurt Parfait recipe from Joyous Detox!

Ingredients

  • 2 x 400mL cans of full fat coconut milk
  • 30 billion CFU probiotic capsules*
  • Optional: 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp real maple syrup
Instructions
  1. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and store overnight or for 12 hours in a warm environment like inside your oven. Remember it's in there and do not use your oven!
  2. Crack open each probiotic for a total of 30 billion bacteria into the coconut cream and combine.
  3. If using, the vanilla and maple syrup can be added after 12 hours.
  4. Place in a clean jar and refrigerate for up to 7-10 days.
  5. Refrigerate coconut milk cans overnight to allow time for the cream to separate from the coconut water.
  6. Scoop coconut cream from can and place in a clean bowl. Let warm up to room temperature to make it easier to mix in the probiotics.
  7. The next day, mix the yogurt with a spoon, it should be nice and creamy and smell tangy/sour just like yogurt. If it smells funky or the colour is off, discard the yogurt.

Notes

*If you can't find capsules that are 30 billion.
You can use 3 x 10 billion capsules.

Just make sure you use organic canned full-fat coconut milk because this recipe will not work with liquid coconut milk in a carton and might not work with homemade coconut milk  either if you don’t have enough of the fatty cream.

I LOVE Cha’s Organic Coconut Milk because the flavour is incredibly rich and it’s free from additives. If you live in the U.S and can’t find Cha’s, I also like Native Forest.

Once you’ve made this coconut yogurt you can enjoy it many different ways:

  • Slurp it with a spoon!
  • Make my Coconut Yogurt Parfait from Joyous Detox on page 10.
  • Toss it in a smoothie. This smoothie  would be perfect with the addition of this yogurt.
  • Can’t eat avocados? This yogurt is the perfect replacement especially in smoothies for a creamy consistency like this smoothie.
  • If you find it’s too sour or tangy for you, just add some raw honey, maple syrup or vanilla before you eat it.

And finally, the benefits of this homemade yogurt are impressive. Just like all  fermented foods , this yogurt supports gut health, which is essential for:

I’m excited to hear what you think of this wonderful recipe! Be sure to share in the comments section below.

Have a joyous day!

  1. The first ingredient says “full fat coconut yogurt” …do you mean coconut milk?

  2. Hi Joy, I have been buying coconut milk kefir (it’s rather costly) – I was on antibiotics recently and am working on rebuilding my gut flora. Your recipe sounds so easy and I’m going to try it. Question; do I still need to take my daily probiotic if I am eating this yogourt daily?

  3. Hi Joy – Can you use any probiotic? I have some capsules in the fridge at home already that I take daily. Thanks!

  4. Looks and sounds delicious! What can you do with the coconut water that you separate from the cream? Thanks!

  5. I think that there might be a typo in your recipe. You have 2 cans of coconut yogurt but in the video you have two cans of coconut milk.

  6. Thank you for the yummy recipe :). I have another brand of probiotic capsules, can I use them? Or does it have to be the one you mentioned? Can’t wait to try this!

  7. Rachel Molenda

Hey Laura, You could but I’m not sure if the consistency will be the same. I would recommend sticking with the cans and using the full fat in the coconut milk after it’s refrigerated 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  8. Rachel Molenda

Hey Ghada, Glad you enjoyed it! Yes that should be okay providing its a high-quality clean probiotic with multiple strains of bacteria 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  9. Rachel Molenda

Hey Renee! Yup, you are most definitely right – there was (haha!) We’ve fixed that now but thanks so much for catching that 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  10. Rachel Molenda

Hey Andrea! It certainly is 🙂 It’s great to throw in a smoothie – super hydrating due to its electrolyte content! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

Hey Sina, Yup – you’re right! Our bad 🙂 We’ve updated that on our end. Thanks for catching that! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  12. Rachel Molenda

Hey Jennifer, Yup that should be okay providing they are a clean high-quality sourced probiotic 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  13. Hey Joy, just wanted to confirm that any other probiotics are OK to use correct? For example Genestra HMF?

  14. Rachel Molenda

Hey Jen, That’s great! Fermented foods are a great way to proliferate good bacteria in the gut. You don’t have to necessarily take your probiotic if you are eating this daily – although it doesn’t hurt either 🙂 We typically recommend people to get in 1 source of probiotics of fermented foods daily. Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  15. Rachel Molenda

Hey Erica, Yup – you’re right! Our bad 🙂 We’ve updated that on our end. Thanks for catching that! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  16. Rachel Molenda

Hey Gessica, Yup those would work too! We would just advise anyone to use a high-quality clean probiotic 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  17. Joy I love your videos and all your lovely knowledge you pass on to us. I have a question as to how I can take off the bottom bar of your site where it has the pinterest, facebook and twitter icons. I can only see about 3 inches of your video because the top bar and bottom bars take up to much screen.
Is there some way to do this.

  18. Rachel Molenda

Hey Tricia, Thanks so much! We’re so glad to hear you’re enjoying all things Joyous Health 🙂 Hmm, that’s odd. I wonder why that might be happening. Do you mind sharing what browser and device you are using when browsing Joyous Health? This will help us to troubleshoot the issue for you. Thanks! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  19. Rachel Molenda

Hey Carol, We would advise you to use it within 3-4 days to make sure it’s super fresh! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  20. After making the coconut yogurt, can I use it as a starter and just add more milk to it to make more? And if so, how long should I wait for that process?

  21. I tried this last night but it was a total flop! 🙁 The mixture was completely liquid after 12 hours. What could have gone wrong? I put it in the oven but turned the light on. Could the environment been too warm? I used 1 can full fat coconut milk

  22. Rachel Molenda

Hey Mckenzie! So happy to hear you enjoyed it 🙂 Let us know if you end up trying it! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  23. Did it last night, I did refrigerate my can before but did not get much solid in the end… Decided to give it a try (1 can and 2 capsules), put it on the top of my fridge but this morning it was super runny! Maybe it’s the brand I used… Yours looks so much better than mine! I put it in the fridge so Îll check how it looks when I come back home tonight! Hope it got a littlebit more creamy then… Oh well!

  24. Joy McCarthy

It will likely get thicker once you put it in the fridge because of the good fat in the coconut milk. Either way, I hope it tastes wonderful!

  25. Joy McCarthy

Sorry to hear it was a flop. That’s super strange because the full fat cream of the coconut milk is super thick so it should maintain some of it’s consistency and then will get thicker in the fridge. I would suggest just using it for a smoothie and trying again another day! Also, use the brands I suggested, that might make a difference too!

  26. Joy McCarthy

Hey Jenise! I haven’t personally done this yet but I’m confident that will work. However, I don’t know how long you need to wait for that process because I gobble it all up before making it again 🙂

  27. How would we track this in my fitness pal? Since the water is drained I’m thinking it changes fat grams etc…

I made it and LOVE it. I’m trying to eliminate dairy and this can be my go to breakfast with fruit instead of Greek cow’s milk yogurt but I don’t want to increase my fat grams too much. Thanks

  28. Rachel Molenda

Hey Cori, Not entirely sure about that one as we typically like to evaluate food from more of a qualitative perspective 🙂 However if you wanted to find out the fat grams, it would likely be what it says on the can as there wouldn’t be much fat left in the coconut water. I’m so happy you loved the recipe though 🙂 There’s no need to fear the fat either – it comes with a wealth of health benefits which you can find here: https://www.joyoushealth.com/25062-blog-the-benefits-of-fat-and-healthy-sources Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  29. I made this last night and put it in the fridge in the morning. I am home from work and wanted to have some but it is really hard. It is not smooth like yogurt. Any thoughts on what I did wrong?

  30. Spagirlmindy

Love this! I made it today with fresh, local strawberries and my own granola! BLISS!

  31. Joy McCarthy

Take it out of the fridge and let it thaw for a little bit. The coconut fat has probably just gotten too cold.

  32. Ahh total and I walked my mom through this recipe hers turned out perfectly ugh!! I think my coconut was to cold from the start so was hard to get out of the cans and then hard to mix it all togwtbe- was piecey and watery this morning – totally needed to let it come to room temp more I think before mixing it all- tastes good just looks nasty ha

  33. Rachel Molenda

Hey Nicols, Oh no! It can be a finicky process, but we promise, the results are very much worth it 🙂 Did you use the same brand of coconut milk Joy used? That might help bring more consistency to your results as well! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  34. Rachel Molenda

Mmm! That sounds awesome, Mindy! 🙂 So glad you enjoyed it! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  35. Hello, I tried making this and followed directions but I cut the recipe in half. I left it in the oven overnight and it came out looking oily and soupy. What did I do wrong?

  36. Thank you for a such easy coconut yougurt I have come upon so many but your was most easy of them all quick and easy thank I really do love all of you recipes

  37. Thank you Joy for such an easy and quick recipe I have to say all of your recipes are simple quick and easy love them all

  38. Joy McCarthy

I would suggest adding some more of the coconut cream to thicken it up a bit. That might help. Also, when you put it in the fridge it should thicken a bit too.

  39. Made this and it was amazing – thank you! Sweetened it with vanilla. Might add a pinch of salt next time to bring out the sweetness.

Wondering what the recommended serving size for this would be? Roughly? It is quite a bit richer than normal / greek yogurt (e.g. one cup serving size), so just wondering what you would recommend.

    Thank you!

  40. Rachel Molenda

Hey Hilary, So happy you enjoyed it! You’re right – it’s hard to say, but I would recommend starting with 1/4-1/2 cup and seeing how you feel after you add all of the toppings and what not which will be filling as well! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  41. Rachel Molenda

Hey Ana, So glad you loved it 🙂 We really loved quick, simple but especially delicious around here so we’re happy to hear you’re loving it too! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  42. Pati Clark

Don’t you have to cook the milk to 180 degrees then cool down to 100 degrees then add in probiotics with some kind of sugar so the probiotics feed on the sugar ?

  43. Rachel Molenda

Hey Pati, Not with this recipe at least. Perhaps with some other recipes? Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  44. Hey Joy- is the coconut yogurt fine for babies to eat even though I am using an adult strain probiotic?
    Thanks

  45. Can you use cans of organic coconut cream instead of the full fat coconut milk?

  46. Rachel Molenda

Hey Kristina! I suppose you could, but it may throw off the ratios since Joy made this recipe with the coconut cream from the coconut milk can. If you end up giving it a try, let us know how it goes! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  47. Rachel Molenda

Hey Nicole, Yes, for sure! The amount leftover in the yogurt won’t be enough to cause any digestive upset for the babe 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  48. Rachel Molenda

Hey Lindsay! Sounds like you’re enjoying it! Woohoo 🙂 That makes us very happy to hear! Hope it goes well! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  49. I saw the video, and I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to try it! I was wondering if the granola recipe is somewhere I can find it? I definitely want to make my own, but I’m concerned about the cost of the ingredients.

  50. Hi there,

Do you know the tsp equivalent of the capsules? I have probiotic powder at home that I’d like to use – I’m just not sure how much to put in!

    Thanks!

  51. Rachel Molenda

Hey Monica, Joy has only ever made it this way so we can’t vouch for the instant pot, however I’ve heard of a lot of people having great success with it 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  52. Rachel Molenda

Hey Alexandra, Each capsule contains 15 billion CFU of probiotics. I imagine your probiotic powder’s suggested serving size is in “billion CFU” so I would look at what the serving size is and match it to the amount of probiotics in the capsules, if that makes sense 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  53. Hello, I left the cans of coconut milk in the fridge for several days and when I opened the first can, the milk was hard as a rock. Could I have left it in the fridge too long before trying to make it?

  54. Rachel Molenda

Hey Michelle, Perhaps! It depends on the temperature of your fridge. But in that case, you could just leave it on the counter to come closer to room temperature (while ensuring the coconut cream still says separate). That should do the trick! 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  55. Michele crump

Hi joy, love your blog so informative! I am in the process of making this yogurt I am using native Forrest brand simple no guar gum I left it in the fridge over night but it’s still a little runny not quite as thick as yours if I put it in the freezer for a bit would that help to thicking it up? Also after you add probiotics and mix it can you eat it right away or do you have to let it sit? Just wondering the reason for it having to sit for 12 hours. Thanks, Michele

  56. Rachel Molenda

Hey Michele, Thanks so much for your kind words! So glad you’re enjoying all things Joyous Health 🙂 Keeping it on the counter for 12 hours allows the coconut yogurt to ferment and proliferate with beneficial probiotic bacteria. Putting it in the freezer might help a bit but shouldn’t need too long! This recipe is sensitive to temperature (i.e. Joy’s fridge might be slightly colder than yours) so it may take some time to finesse it 🙂 Hope that helps! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  57. Hi Joy! I bought the GH probiotics and just finished my first package of the 15 billion CFU. I didn’t feel any difference while taking them. Is this normal, or should there be a noticeable difference in bloating, etc.? I’m on the fence about buying another package since I didn’t feel any better while taking them.

  58. Rachel Molenda

Hey Claire, Probiotics aren’t something you will feel a huge physical difference from but it is still working it’s magic in your digestive system 🙂 With that said, the 15 billion dose might have been too low for you so you could definitely look to increase the dose to either 30 billion (taking 2/day) or the 50 billion probiotics they have available. Are you still experiencing bloating or digestive distress in any way? Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  59. I love coconut yogurt and will definitely have to try and make my own. I’ve been meaning to ask you this question. What do you think about organic buffalo yogurt? Do you categorize is like Cow Yogurt? Thank you

  60. Hello

When is best time to eat yogurt before meals, after meals, in between meals for the best benefits of the probiotic in them. Best to eat yogurt by itself or with a fruit. 🙂
    Thanks

  61. Rachel Molenda

Hey Annie, There’s no real rhyme or reason to this. Having it for breakfast or as a snack is a great way to get your probiotics in 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  62. kenishia A.

Hey Joy! Thank u so much for making this video. I have issues with cows milk yogurt as well. I love yogurt a whole lot but when I try different ones from the grocery store, it hurts my stomach.so your recipe is my answer. A huge thank u! I look forward to making and eating this yogurt!😉

  63. I have the Genuine Health 50 billion probiotics…should I use 4 for this recipe or perhaps less? Thank you!

  64. Hi Joy, I used organic coconut milk full cream and left it in the fridge overnight. However, the coconut milk wasn’t that thick like in your video, it was more creamy. Is that okay? Or should I leave it in fridge for a longer time maybe? Also, if I use to probiotics can my 13 month old have it as well?

  65. Rachel Molenda

Hey Grace, It should be more thick and creamy. What brand did you use? This recipe can be a bit sensitive so it’s best to go for a high-quality full-fat coconut milk. It might be helpful to leave it in the fridge for a bit longer. It should be okay for your 13 month old to have since the probiotics used are for the whole batch, but as always, we recommend checking in with your natural health care practitioner on this before introducing anything new 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  66. Michelle L

This is the easiest coconut milk yogurt recipe I have found. Could I use the Cultures for Health Vegan Yogurt Starter instead of the capsules? Also, could I incubate this in the Instant Pot on the yogurt setting?

  67. Rachel Molenda

Hey Michelle, We haven’t used either of those to make coconut yogurt but they both sound like suitable options! If you end up trying it, let us know how it turns out 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  68. When I pulled mine out of the oven the next morning it was totally liquidy! Has this happened to anyone else before? Any tips??

  69. Rachel Molenda

Hey Callie, What coconut milk did you use? This recipe is quite sensitive so it’s important to use a high-quality coconut milk like Cha’s Organics! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  70. Hi Joy. I’m new to your community and just found this great coconut yogurt recipe. I have fresh probiotics that I’d like to use up; any reason I can’t? Also, when I went to the Amazon link you provided, I saw that Genuine Health offers a 50 billion capsule. If I use that in the future, would I only have to use one capsule? Thanks for your reply!

  71. Sounds like a great recipe, I will try! But I don’t know if i’d consider inside of my oven warm… should I protest it a bit beforehand or keep the light on so it gets warm? Thanks!

  72. Rachel Molenda

Hey Ella, It’s a confined closed area so it will be a bit warmer than room temperature 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  73. Rachel Molenda

Hey Barbara, We probably wouldn’t recommend it just because you’re dealing with live cultures when you’re fermenting which can be a risk with young children. Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  74. Jackie A.

Hi. I have been looking for jars just like the straight sided mason looking jar in you video, the one you have your yogurt in. Can you tell what type it is? It looks like a perfect yogurt jar to bring on the go. Thanks so much!

  75. If I want to make yogurt that isn’t as thick, can I use a can of Cha’s Organic Coconut Milk without chilling

  76. Rachel Molenda

Hey Karen, That should do the trick! We haven’t tried it so we wouldn’t be able to guarantee results but let us know how you find it if you end up trying it 🙂 Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  77. Wooow…thanks joy! ‘Joyous you!:) I’m certainly going to make this recipe given the fact that i am not at peace with cow milk as i never touch it! …. Lotta hugs..i’ll post pics when i do!

  78. Rachel Molenda

Yay! Awesome 🙂 Can’t wait to hear what you think, Renee! Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  79. Can’t wait to try it! My first batch was not successful ( probiotic was too old I believe) and found two YouTube clips that will steer me in the right direction. The other one uses the dull can vs. just the cream like you do so I’ll try both – I suspect yours will turn out more like Greek yogurt. Do no need for dehydrator or yogurt maker, huh? Guess that’s only for cows milk yogurt?
    Thanks!

  80. Joy McCarthy

Hi Lynn, you’re correct, you do not need a yogurt maker for this recipe! The probiotics do all the work for you. Hope it turns out delicious! If it’s too thin, remember you can always strain it. Enjoy!

  81. I made this and I tasted great. Put it in the fridge and now it’s grainy like that fat curdled What did I do wrong?

  82. Joy McCarthy

Mmm, that’s tough to say what went wrong. Usually something will curdle when it’s heated not when it’s refrigerated so I’m not sure what to suggest here. Maybe you left it out to ferment too long? It could be that the fat globules have solidified in your fridge. Take it out 15-20 minutes before you’re going to eat it and see if that makes a difference. Good luck!

  83. Peggy Turner

I only had one can and added a capsule of 60 Billion genuine health. Will that ruin it?

  84. I followed the steps, but I’m not sure if my batch came out right. I used Thai Cooking full fat coconut milk in a can, and after taking it out of the fridge, there was a hard shell of coconut oil on top that didn’t appear on the video recipe. I think it hindered my recipe because instead of a creamy consistency, it is more curdle-y. I left the yogurt in the oven, covered with plastic wrap overnight, and the yogurt has a sulfur smell to it. I used the same probiotics as the recipe, so I think my coconut milk is the problem. What type of coconut milk are you using?

  85. Rachel Molenda

Hey Kayla, Yes we’re finding this recipe is quite sensitive to the type of coconut milk you’re using. We used Cha’s Organics Full Fat Coconut Milk that comes in a BPA-free canned container. We would recommend that if possible 🙂 Also, while Joy uses stainless steel utensils in the video, you may want to stick to using wood only. Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  86. Bernadette

I followed the steps to making coconut milk yogurt at home, but when I took it out of the oven, it was runny and – I think – separate… What do I do now???

  87. Rachel Molenda

Hey Bernadette, What brand of coconut milk did you use? Was it full fat and was your oven warm-ish without it being on? Rachel – Joyous Health Team

  88. I attempted this recipe using cans of full fat coconut milk from SPROUTS. Two days in the frig and I did not get the consistency or separation you did. Can you recommend a brand or name the one you used for my next attempt. Love your videos.
    Thank you

  89. Joy McCarthy

I used Chas Organics full-fat coconut milk. Once you’ve refrigerated it, depending how much coconut fat vs water there is in the yogurt, it can get very hard in the fridge. You may need to let it sit on the counter a little to thaw.

  90. Has my yogurt not turned out properly if it smells sulfury? It tastes and looks fine. I used 2 caps of the genuine health 50billion probiotic

  91. Joy McCarthy

Hmmm, sulfur smell is usually like rotten eggs meaning something has gone off. Cheese smell on the other hand is a good thing! It’s hard to say without sniffing it myself but it sounds like it’s gone off. Was it in a really warm area?

  92. Thanks for replying! I don’t think it was too warm. Just in the oven like you mentioned. It was placed in at 930pm and the oven was off since 5pm.
Its a pretty strong smell 😆. Rotten egg smell. But it does taste great! And the colour is fine too. I did a bit of google research and it seems to be okay.
It may have been the oven was too warm? I can’t stomach the smell but do you think I could hide it in smoothies?

  93. Joy McCarthy

If you don’t mind the smell and it’s not bothering you then I guess it’s okay! Yes you could definitely hide it in smoothies.

  94. Valerie B.

    Hello,

Would a Genuine Health Women’s 50 billion capsule work for this yogurt?

Also, do you need to boil your glass container prior to use or is clean from the dishwasher safe enough?

    Thanks,
    Valerie

  95. Joy McCarthy

Clean from the dishwasher should be good enough. And yes, it would still work with 50 billion – it might actually ferment faster. Enjoy!

  96. Joy McCarthy

I don’t have an instant pot so I’m not sure but if you make it please let me know!

  97. Christine P.

What do you mean by place it in the oven? Completely cooled down switched off oven?

  98. Hello! Just wondering if I can cover the bowl with a lid or a plate instead of using cling wrap to reduce plastic waste? 🙂

  99. Is this a better price to make it?
I want this for my family i have 2 boys.. one is 7 years and other boy is 22 months. Are the probiotics ok for them

  100. Joy McCarthy

Yes probiotics are definitely good for little ones, big and small. It’s hard to say, it really depends on the brand of coconut milk you’re using. I still buy coconut yogurt for convenience and then skip a week buying it when I’ve made this delicious recip.

  101. How about if i cant buy probiotics..just want to eat it without probiotics…do the step change???

  102. Joy McCarthy

You’ll need to add something to start the culturing process. You can use the juice from a jar of raw sauerkraut or kombucha. Hope that helps!

  103. Joy, when you say to put into an oven that is off; are you referring to a gas oven? An electric oven wouldn’t be warm at all. Is there a min/ max temperature it should be in? I have an Instant Pot and make cows milk yogurt quite a bit but want to switch to healthier eating. The Instant Pot is 108 degrees on the yogurt setting. Is this a good temperature for coconut yogurt?

  104. Joy McCarthy

I have an electric oven, which because it’s like a little box is typically a little bit warmer than my home. So it’s not “on” but it always feels a little warmer. If however you live somewhere warm all year round then your countertop is probably fine. I’m not sure about an Instant Pot because I don’t have one so I can’t advise you, sorry. But my guess is you could follow the same instructions as cow’s milk yogurt. Let me know how it goes!

  105. Hi Joy,

Love your recipe! My coconut fat was sooo hard when I scooped it out after being in the fridge. The organic coconut milk I used had fat but it didn’t indicate if it was full fat. Has this ever happened to you?

    Thank you kindly.

  106. Joy McCarthy

You mean after the yogurt was made? Yes this can happen. Just let it sit on your counter for about 5 minutes and it should melt enough to scoop. Enjoy!

Made my first batch following your recipe, turned out great. Kind of difficult finding coconut milk at our local grocers, though. Went to an Asian market, wow, all kinds of coconut products. Bought some coconut cream, did not have to separate the cream off the top like in your recipe since it’s all cream, made my second batch using the cream, let it sit in the over for 24 hours, not 12, came out even thicker more like Greek yogurt consistency. Search online for other recipes, most all say to let the yogurt ferment in mild heat like a yogurt maker, crockpot, etc. Have you tried the heat method? Also, one recipe called for a 1/4 teaspoon of sugar to aid the fermentation process. Your opinion on this?

  108. Joy McCarthy

I haven’t tried the heat method, only cause I wanted to keep it as easy as possible. However, it would probably ferment faster with a little heat. Yes you can add that but there are natural sugars in the coconut milk that will be food for the bacteria. I haven’t found added sugar is at all necessary, so you can skip it.

  109. Hi Joy!

I made your yogurt the other day but I must have done something very wrong because my yogurt turned super runny and gave me a tummy ache! K here’s what I did. Hoping you can steer me straight.
2 cans of full fat coconut cream, scooped out cream and mixed in probiotic. I poured it into sterilized jars and placed in my yogurt maker (which is basically a warm plate with a lid that you set the jars in). The next day the thick cream turned super runny. Silly me ate it and well…things didn’t turn out great for me. Where must I have gone wrong?

  110. Joy McCarthy

Hi Lisa, sorry to hear it didn’t turn out well and you had a tummy ache. I haven’t made it in a yogurt maker before so I wonder if maybe it was too warm?? Hmm, not sure I can help you troubleshoot when it sounds like you did everything right. What brand of probiotics did you use?

  111. This is so easy and looks delicious. Do you happen to know what the nutritional value is for the yogurt in terms of fat, protein, calories and carbohydrates? Thanks.

  112. Hi Joy,
I used the full fat ARoyD coconut cream and 4 scoops of Renew Life Flora Baby.

  113. Hi Joy,

I haven’t tried your coconut kefir yet (waiting for the shipment of coconut milk). Is there a way you can provide the nutrition details for this recipe?

  114. Antoinette Marie Imus

    Hello. My experience.

The first time I made this used all the liquid and it was runny. I have Lyme and Candida big time and was anxious to have something sweet.
The second time i used the cream and saved the liquid. I put antibiotics and out overnight in oven. I added some vanilla and stevia. It was really good. But then stored it in a glass bowl with the lid in the refrigerator. It became hard and chunky! So I put it in my Vitamix and added the liquid. Now it is back in the fridge. Please advise. What seems so easy has become difficult for me. Thanks 🙏🏻 Antoinette

  115. Joy McCarthy

It can get hard in the fridge when the fat in the coconut solidifies. At room temperature however, it will begin to melt and soften. I would suggest leaving it out of the fridge for about 10 minutes. Enjoy!!

  116. Hi, joy, I’m giving my kids a proviotic powder that comes in a bottle; can I use that instead of the capsules and if so how much should I use? Thanks in advance

  117. Joy McCarthy

You’ll have to check how many CFU is in a scoop. Typically a probiotic powder should come with a little scooper and the label will state how many probiotics per serving. Then use the same amount as my recipe. Enjoy!

  118. Hi there
I used the exact amounts of ingredients as the repice and I just had the same situation as Jody:(. Used 2 cans of Organic Coconut Milk from Biona and 6 capsules of 10 bilion probiotics from BioCare (uk products). the milk was thick when I took it out from the can and at the end completely liquidish

  119. Joy McCarthy

The challenge with making your own ferments is that it’s not an exact science. Bacteria behave differently depending on a variety of factors/conditions. I would suggest refrigerating the yogurt and it will thicken up a bit. If it doesn’t then it sounds like you have more of a kefir consistency which is also amazing for gut health. Enjoy!

  120. Thank you for the recipe…But the coconut yogurt goes hard once you refrigerate. What am I a missing?

  121. Joy McCarthy

It really depends how much fat is in there, but yes you may need to leave it out for a few minutes before you eat it. That’s fairly normal 🙂

  122. Jessica Sinclair

I made this yesterday and it turned out delicious! It was runny by the end of 12 hours, but once overnight in the fridge was the perfect consistency! I don’t like the big tang of Greek yogurt and struggle to like it, and found that this wasn’t very tangy in comparison – I love it! BUT – I’m wondering if I did something wrong! I only had 3 capsules of probiotics left, so there is 15billion less (ha – sounds dramatic!) and I wonder if that’s the reason or if it’s just not as tangy – (amaZing if so! Ha!)

  123. Joy McCarthy

Glad you loved it Jessica! It’s very hard to say. Different bacteria will yield a different result. Also, other factors such as the temperature in your home can greatly affect the outcome too.

  124. Crystal Lee

Hi Joy! I just made this and it’s not tasting tangy at all like yogurt. Still just like coconut cream. Do I leave it sit longer? Or add more probiotics? Thank you so much, love your recipes!

  125. Joy McCarthy

That sounds like it hasn’t begun to ferment so yes I would leave it a little longer. Hope it works out!

  126. Hi, I just made this for the first time last night and just now tried it this morning. It is really good! And super simple to make, too. I found no need to add sweetener even because the coconut is a little sweet naturally already. Very good, I will be making this again!

  127. Which Chas do you use? I tried the full cream and it does not separate in the fridge so when I added the probiotic it remained too runny. Now I have a can of Chas premium coconut milk in the fridge and again the cream and liquid are not separating therefore I think the same will happen and I’m not getting thick coconut yogurt?

  128. Joy McCarthy

Hmmm, I haven’t made it for a couple of months now because I’ve been buying coconut kefir lately. But try Thai Kitchen or Native Forest, they separate really easily if you’re having trouble with Cha’s. I just really love the taste of Cha’s.

  129. Hello! I’ve made this recipe before with Native Forest and it has turned out great! However, I would like to avoid guar gum, so I thought I would give Cha’s Organics a try. I bought the Premium and Cream types, but after being refrigerated (and before, for that matter) the “cream” is chunky and curdled-like, not smooth as in your video. After adding probiotics and allowed to ferment, the consistency is the same. Very chunky. Is this normal for Cha’s Organics because the gum is missing? Thanks!

  130. Joy McCarthy

It’s possible they’ve changed it because it was Cha’s I used in this video so that might be what happened. But yes it’s very normal to have a different result and even a different result from one time to the next with the same ingredients because culturing/fermenting is not an exact science. There are so many factors that come into effect. I would say the most important thing is that it tastes good!

  131. Joy McCarthy

Hi Lindsay, I’m not sure, I don’t have an instant pot. Maybe just google it? I’m sure someone has done it before.

  132. Patricia dewey

Instead of putting coconut cream with probiotics in oven over night could it go in electric food dehydrator over night on very low temp?

  133. Joy McCarthy

Hmmm, I’m really not sure as I haven’t tried that myself. It may be too warm but that would do 1 of 2 things, it will either make it ferment faster or it will grow mold. If you do try it, please let me know!

  134. I have tried making this with 2 x 400 mL cans of Cha’s organics Premium coconut milk and 4 x 15 billion genuine health probiotic capsules and it still turned out runny.

  135. Joy McCarthy

You can always drain some of the liquid and that can help it thicken. But the challenge always is that culturing and fermenting foods is not an exact science. If you pop it in the fridge it should solidify. Try that and let me know how you make out 🙂

  136. Hi,
I didn’t have coconut milk but used an actual can of coconut cream. I let it sit for 12 hours in the oven but it didn’t taste tangy like yogurt. Also it’s still watery. I think I messed up. Can anyone help? I hate to throw it out.

  137. Joy McCarthy

It’s possible that you need to let it sit a little longer. What brand of probiotics did you use?

  138. Joy McCarthy

It can take 12 to 24 hours depending on how warm your home is. Sometimes it doesn’t work if the probiotics are not alive. However, that’s a decent brand so I don’t feel concerned it’s a faulty probiotic. Give it another 12 hours.

  139. Hey Joy! So I added the maple syrup and vanilla extract when I mixed everything in and was gonna not put in the oven overnight. Just realized it said to mix in vanilla and maple syrup after! Will it mess up the process?

  140. Joy McCarthy

Oh shoot! I think it will still ferment but you’ll have to watch it closely because the sugars in the maple syrup will provide an abundance of food for the bacteria so I’m not sure if this means it will go bad too quickly. It should have a tangy taste and yogurt-y smell. If you’ve got that tomorrow, then you’re in the clear! I will look at the recipe again and see if I need to update it too make it more clear.

  141. Hi Joy
I’m assuming you cannot follow this recipe and push yogurt button on insta pot? I have no clue. Lol
But when making your way , after keeping the can in fridge overnight, app how much cream comes off the can ? 1/2c , 1c? And I assume o throw away the thin stuff ? Tnx

  142. Joy McCarthy

I’m not sure because I don’t have an insta pot. It really depends on the brand of coconut milk you’re using and how fatty it is. I would say the Chas’s brand is a little over half cream and then coconut water if memory serves me correct!

  143. Hey :). Making for first time with my mom
She has 35 billion caps. I have 60 billion
    Can I just use 1 60 and she use 2x 35=70 ?
So we don’t have to go buy more just to make it. ! Lmk range of what should be used Tnx 🙂

  144. hi Joy. technical difficulties 🙁 we bought 2 cans of Chas organic premium coconut milk , i thought thats what you suggested? sooo, making now, not even close to how thick yours was , we got close to half a can of the thick stuff if that, and doesnt look at all like the amount you got in the bowl (2 cups ) . it was in fridge for a couple days at least. and 1 can was super hard and crumbly, the other was ok but not thick and creamy looking like yours. help. !!!! 🙂 tnx

  145. hi Joy, we just made it. used 2 cans of cha’s premium coconut milk >. is this the full fat one ? I looked at both natures and healthy planet , never saw a can that said FULL FAT. can you tell me exact one you used please. ? also, 1 can came out really hard from fridge, other looked fine , we did let it sit at room temp to soften, took a while ,added the probiotics , in fridge glass bowl, and a FLOP 🙁 not a lot in bowl( we didn’t get a lot of cream from cans and it was runny, this is tricky business and my cans were 10$ for 2 not cheap, any suggestions for next crack at it ? 🙂 tnx

  146. Joy McCarthy

Hi Sue, if your fridge is really cold then the fat in the coconut will solidify. Did it eventually soften up? It’s the same how like how butter is cold in the fridge but softens up on the counter. That seems strange you didn’t get much cream from the cans though. Did you refrigerate the cans of coconut milk before making it? That will make it easier to separate the fat from liquid. This is the one I use: https://well.ca/products/chas-organics-premium-coconut-milk_105608.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgMKlisjm6gIVhIjICh1ckgidEAQYASABEgKfCvD_BwE

Culturing foods is not an exact science and many factors can alter the outcome — the temp in your home, how sterile your home is, the brand of probiotics you’re using etc.

Did it smell/tasty tangy? If yes, then you’ve got yogurt!

  147. I love this
I have been thinking of going into commercial production of coconut yoghurt
    Can you help?

  148. Joy McCarthy

Exciting, congrats to you! Not sure what kind of help you’re looking for? Feel free to reach out to us on our contact form 🙂

  149. Hi! Can I use 1 x 50 billion genuine health probiotic capsules instead of 4 x 15 ones? Thank you!

  150. Chelsea Rink

Would you be able to use a children’s probiotic in this to make for a baby? We have a powder one.

  151. Hi!
Normally I make this and it turns out great. Lately, my coconut milk even after putting it in the fridge does not separate the cream from the milk. I use the Chas full fat coconut milk- could it be that the cans are not ‘fresh’ anymore?

  152. Joy McCarthy

I would suggest contacting Cha’s to ask them if there is any change in their formulation but to my knowledge there hasn’t been. Worth looking into though!

  153. Joy McCarthy

Yes it is. Even though most probiotics are derived from human microflora, they are considered vegan if they do not have any dairy in them.

  154. Hi girl,I love how easy it is,but you didn’t say anything about put it in the fridge, I suppose that’s where it goes right?sorry for asking, thank you

  155. Joy McCarthy

Yes, you got it! Once it’s fermented to the desired tanginess you like, keep it in the fridge 🙂
