The countdown to the official launch of my second book, Joyous Detox, has officially started and I could not be more excited!! I can’t wait to share tons of new recipes, food tips and lifestyle habits to help you feel more joyous than ever!
I designed Joyous Detox to be not just a diet, or a thing you do once in a while when you’re feeling less than your best. I want it to be a sustainable lifestyle that helps you detox a little more every day.
But that begs the question: why do we need to detox in the first place?
Our liver is designed to help our body get rid of anything potentially harmful or toxic. The trouble is that modern lifestyle and eating habits mean we are exposed to so many more toxins through so many more different avenues than our poor livers were ever designed to handle. Here are some of the biggest reasons why we should all look at leading a more detox-friendly life:

Hi Joy,
Just curious – what is the difference between coffee and caffeinated tea for your liver? Both drinks are caffeine and would require your liver to work through it.
Would you suggest for people to avoid caffeinated teas?

Great question, Susan! Because caffeine (whether from coffee OR tea) must be processed by the liver, we recommend enjoying caffeine free herbal teas in place of caffeinated versions during a detox. I hope that helps!

Great article. With the mention of prescription drugs, it refers to the use of these as being temporary, that people stop using them once the condition they are treating has been “solved”. What then is the attitude towards prescription medication that may need to be taken for life, such as anti-seizure medication for epilepsy or pressure reduction medication to prevent blindness caused by glaucoma. These conditions are not curable, so to speak. There’s so much medication-shaming, especially from the perspective of those touting an “all-natural” lifestyle and approach to health. I’m not suggesting that’s what’s happening in this informative article, but perhaps it could be included that, for many people, life-long prescription medications are a necessary reality and this should be acknowledged in dialogue aimed at supporting people’s health despite the use of “toxic” substances to avoid. Some people can’t simply avoid these “toxins”, where is the support and acceptance for them? Interested to see if people can include this in their paradigm. Thanks.
