How to Use Dry Shampoo and Why You’ll Love it!

Dry shampoo is essential if you want to extend the time in between washes and get healthier hair.

When I got my bangs cut about 8 years ago, I immediately went to the drug store to purchase dry shampoo on advice from my hair stylist. Dry shampoo is essential when you have bangs especially if you don’t want to wash your hair every day! It’s also essential if you’re currently washing your hair every day and you want to save time and water (not to mention the life of your locks).

I grabbed the first bottle of dry shampoo I saw without even thinking. The next morning when I woke up with greasy looking bangs, I sprayed the dry shampoo in my hair and was totally grossed out by the  fragrance   of the product. I read the ingredients label and was pretty horrified when I realized what was in it and slightly embarrassed with myself I would purchase a product in an aerosol spray can – what was I thinking!?!  Read this post to find out what’s really in your dry shampoo!

From that day on, I  made my own   because there was nothing even remotely clean on the market. A few years later I shared this wonderful DIY dry shampoo from Kathrin (who is an eco-beauty guru) and after months of research and development, we created our very own dry shampoo for you, which you can find in the Joyous shop. It is even more effective than the  DIY recipe  , plus it has ingredients to support healthy hair.

what is Dry Shampoo and how does it work?

Dry shampoo works by absorbing the oils in your hair that otherwise weigh it down and make it look greasy. It also provides volume to thin or limp hair and allows you to go longer between washes. It’s exactly what it sounds like, shampoo in a powder form that you sprinkle in your hair. It acts as an effective de-greaser so you don’t have to wash your hair with liquid shampoo.

It helps you go longer between washes, which both benefits your hair (less exposure to water and less heat drying) and is good for the environment because you’ll use less water. Plus, it’s an effective way to do a hair detox – put it to the test with the Joyous Health Natural Hair Care Challenge!

How to use dry shampoo

Since I realize that not everyone knows what dry shampoo is or how to use it, we created this little video tutorial to show you how the many different ways to use it from bangs to curly curls like my hubby Walker has!

If you try out our dry shampoo, make sure you use the hashtag #thisishowidryshampoo and tag me @joyoushealth, I can’t wait to hear what you think and see how you use it!

As you can see there are a couple of different ways to use it.

Option 1: Sprinkle it anywhere on your hair and work it through your hair with your fingers. Leave it overnight. Wake up and give your hair a good brush.

Option 2: Sprinkle the powder throughout your roots and let it sit for a few minutes, allowing it to absorb oil and revive your hair! You may notice tiny beads where the powder has collected the oil—don’t worry, you can brush these out. This is the de-greasing power of the dry shampoo in action! You can also use a blow dryer to work the dry shampoo through your roots and remove the beads of powder-oil, but if you’re looking to save time, a brush does the trick quickly and just as effectively.

What makes the Joyous Dry Shampoo awesome?

  • USDA certified organic ingredients
  • Biodegradable packaging
  • Easy to apply
  • Lovely scent (without chemicals!)
  • Key ingredients to support healthy hair like organic Rosemary leaf oil
  • Tapioca and maranta arundinacea root are effective natural ingredients to absorb oil from hair

Also just as important is what is NOT in our dry shampoo:

  • Artificial/synthetic fragrance
  • Talc
  • Dyes
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates
  • Petrochemical-based ingredients
  • Preservatives

There is nothing harmful to you or the environment, period. And it works. You can read reviews here! And you can hop on over to my Instagram and see how I’ve only washed my hair once and I’ve been in Austria for 2 weeks!

Every morning we stroll right past this beautiful farm and today we got to have a tour from the owner Sepi – he has donkeys, chickens, roosters, cows, goats, dogs and a cat (you’ll see them all in my insta stories). I noticed he was walking all around his land shoeless aka #earthing and his feet looked nicer than mine 😆He doesn’t need to mow the lawn cause his donkeys and cows do it. All the time I kept thinking, I bet he and his kids have the healthiest microbiome. Visiting farms is an amazing way to expose your child to microbes that can help foster a healthy immune system. This is one of the reasons we often go to Riverdale Farm in Toronto and other farms outside the city with V. There is scientific research proving that children exposed to these microbes have less allergies and asthma. 👍🏻My hubs volunteered at a farm when he was a kid and I think that’s one of the reasons he is so healthy and has a very robust immune system. Now we just need to move to a farm I guess? 🤷🏻‍♀️😊and finally, how about the view from his farm? 😊V needs her 😎 . . . . . . . #healthykids #joyoushealth #microbiome #austria #wörthersee #farm #lake #vacation #summervacation #vienbean #mcjordanfamily #reifnitz #carinthia #europe #travel #familytravel

Since most dry shampoos on the market only work for light or blonde hair, I created both a “dark” and “light” formula. The Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair is for brunettes, black and auburn hair. The Dry Shampoo for Light Hair is for platinum, pink, light blue, strawberry blonde, blonde, white and grey hair.

There you go! I hope you enjoyed our little video tutorial between myself, Rachel and Walker with his hair flip, lol.

Can’t wait to hear what you think of this new joyous product! If you didn’t already know, we also have a shampoo and conditioner if you’re looking to go clean and green with more of your personal care products!

Have a joyous week!

I use a makeup brush (big powder brush) to apply it, let it sit then brush it through! Its way less messy!

Hey! This looks great! Wondering as a redhead which colour might be best or if you might eventually make one for redheads? Thanks!

That depends whether you’re more strawberry or auburn. If more strawberry redhead then light but if more auburn with brown in your hair then dark. I’ve been on vacation using the “light” formula which I brought by accident (and I have very dark brown hair). I have to massage it in more because it’s not the colour of my hair but it still works! Hope that helps 🙂

  4. Which shampoo do you recommend for gray hair with some dark natural color with the gray.

    Thanks

I LOVE dry shampoo. As a busy mom I totally suck on the wash my hair all the time front so dry shampoo saves my sanity. Works beautifully- and I totally go with the sprinkle, sit, tousle brush method 😉

That’s really tough to say because it’s such an individual thing. I double wash my hair but I only wash about once ever 5-7 days and I have a lot of hair so I would say it lasts me 2-3 months with my husband using it too.

  7. I bought 3 containers for dark hair – to save on shipping cost. unfortunately has left white dust on my hair. Any way to troubleshoot or consider waste of money? Thanks

Hi Claudine! I would suggest adding less of the product. A light sprinkle in each section, finger it through your hair and then you can brush it out. If it’s leaving a white residue it’s because you’re probably adding too much product. Hope that helps!
