I posted this photo on instagram and twitter this morning and many of you were curious what I was holding (note — that’s protein powder all over my fingers :).
So I thought this was a perfect opportunity to share a healthy breakfast!
On the Right: Organic Greens+
Why do I take this? In the mornings, it is important to cleanse and alkalinize your system. As you might have noticed, I “juice” a lot through the summer months because I have access to inexpensive vegetables and fruits at farmers markets. However, in the winter I take my Organic Greens + with water when those veggies are not as available, out of season and can be costly to buy certified organic. As you will read here, it’s got a whack of nutrients. If you are a nutrition nerd, you can read the research and realize it’s easy to be convinced.
On the Left: Balancing Smoothie — this is a very similar recipe to the one I made for the hosts of Global TV’s Morning Show last week* while doing my nutrition segment on tips for balancing your blood sugar for Diabetes awareness month.
The ingredients that make this smoothie very balancing and metabolism boosting include the protein powder, maca root, almond butter, chia seeds and raspberries.
Balancing Smoothie Ingredients:
1 scoop plant-based protein powder (I have my favourites, so check my other smoothie recipes out to see!)
1 schlop crunchy almond butter
1/2 cup frozen organic raspberries
2 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp raw cacao nibs (I love a little crunch)
1 tbsp raw cacao powder (unless you use a chocolate flavoured protein powder)
1 tsp maca root powder
1 cup coconut water
1 cup almond milk (or hemp milk)
Place all ingredients into your blender. Blend until smooth. Now if it’s too thick for your liking, add a touch more coconut water. This will keep you satisfied for a few hours.
Now if this seems like a lot of different ingredients, just remember you can use these superfoods for SO many other recipes!!!
*Please note: My segment links do not stay on Global’s website forever. So my apologies if you click-thru 5 months after this post is up and it’s no longer there.

This looks great – thanks for sharing Joy!
Hey Joy, so I emailed you yesterday about schooling for holistic nutrition only to come across your FAQ about becoming a holistic nutritionist. I realize you’re busy and dont have time to answer questions based on this. But I do need your advice about different schools. I really want to get into holistic nutrition but don’t know how to go about choosing the right school for me. What other schools did you research and did you find any good ones online? I live in Utah and not many schools here teach that, it’s just mostly online schools I have come across. What do I need to look at when searching for a school, & what things should be included in the courses that are a necessity to becoming a holistic nutritionist.
Thank you!
Hi Chamblee, thanks for your message! I replied 🙂
