When I created this smoothie on-set filming a video for joyoushealth.ca today it gave me an instant boost of joyful energy! So I thought to myself, why don’t I just call this lovely recipe “joyful smoothie” because that’s precisely how I felt, plus it was creamy, sweet and yummy.
Joyful Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients — Serves 2
4 tbsp hemp seeds
2 bananas
1 cup frozen organic raspberries (Research has shown organic raspberries to be higher in antioxidants than conventional)
1/2 ripe avocado
1.5 cup hemp milk (or use almond or brown rice milk)
1.5 cup coconut water
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 cups (loosely packed) spinach
Some ice
Blend and enjoy!
My videographer even liked it and I don’t think he was just being nice, because he drank a huge glass. 🙂
Health Benefits of this recipe:
Raspberries: Extremely detoxifying and cancer preventative due to the fibre (8 grams per 1 cup) and naturally occurring plant chemicals called ellagitannins. Remarkably anti-inflammatory due to a long list of phytonutrients and vitamin C. They are also wonderful for diabetics because of their blood sugar balancing effect.
Spinach: Most people think of iron when they think of spinach but this leafy green is more than just as source of iron. In fact, it’s an incredible source of vitamin A and K — natural beautifiers (hair and skin moisture), immune strengthener and bone builder.
Hemp seeds: A vegetarian source of “complete” protein. Plus they are a wonderful source of anti-inflammatory GLA. The protein and fat content help to keep your belly satisfied and your blood sugar balanced.
Coconut Water: Source of electrolytes to quench your thirst. The one cup has more potassium than 2 bananas.
Avocado: This adds a wonderful creamy texture and a boost of monounsaturated fatty acids that will help keep your waistline trim and your puffiness at bay.
Cinnamon: Again, blood sugar balancing! So key for weight management helping you avoid sugar snacks.
The reason I’m shooting a video is because joyous health is getting a facelift for 2013 (holistic of course, there will be NO botox) and I wanted to create a joyous welcome video to make you smile when you visit me. It’s been a long time coming and I’m sooooo excited to unleash this joyous new look.
Of course the vid will have some music. And I would LOVE your feedback on a joyous tune to go along with my video. So I posted on my facebook page these three tunes that I’m considering. Please vote below and tell me what tune you like the best…. specifically what tune is the most joyous!

mmm this smoothie looks delish!! Excited to see what’s to come in 2013 🙂 My vote is for A (cheerful folk song)!
I love the first song! I’ve heard the third song before… on a lot of commercials? So may be nice to do something different too!
Am I doing something wrong? I can’t listen to any of the three songs 🙁

You might need to download a plugin… it should give you an option if your plugins are out of date. Hope you can make it work! If not, you might be able to hear them from my FB page. Good luck!
Love the recipe! My vote is for A too–so cheerful and easy to listen to without any distractions 🙂
I vote for B! Great for a video and nice and joyous like you!
I loved the Cheerful Folk Song! I think it’s lovely.
hi! i like A & B, but I vote for B because it has more of an intro, it doesn’t jolt you into the song as quickly, which I think is good for if people click on your site at work or something and need to turn the sound off 🙂 it also really makes me smile. they are both cute songs though!
My vote is for B, it is definitely the most Joyous!
I vote for A! 🙂
They are all enjoyable but I find B puts a smile on my face and makes me want to dance joyfully!
I really like A. Looking forward to seeing the new joyous health!
Hi Joy,
I enjoy all your posts & videos! You are so great!
I was wondering if you recommend pea protein for smoothies?
Thanks! I’m glad you are excited! 🙂
Happy New Year Joy!
Just made this smoothie, it is delicious. Unfortunately I wrecked my blender with the ice cubes, so I just took the cubes out and used my food processor. The blender had been damaged before so now it goes in the garbage. Just wanted to let you know how yummy this smoothie is. Looking forward to detox next week.
from one holisitic nutritionist to another…how would you address orthorexia among “our own”?
